Keeping it covered

ABTA – the UK’s largest consumer body for the travel industry – has revealed that thousands of festivalgoers are putting themselves at risk of sky-high medical bills.

ABTA found that around 1 in 4 of travellers went abroad without travel insurance in 2012, up from the 1 in 5 recorded in 2011. But in the under-25 age range that includes a huge number of festivalgoers, this figure shot up to nearly 50%, while male travellers are 8% less likely than females to take out insurance.

Many travellers also appear to be unsure what travel insurance is for, with some consumers mistakenly believing that travel insurance is unnecessary as the UK government will pay for their treatment if they become ill abroad. Others wrongly assume that when travelling in Europe, they don’t need insurance because they have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) - but this only provides access to basic state medical care and will never cover the costs of repatriation to the UK, whether by regular flight or air ambulance.

With travel insurance so cheap (you can buy yours through our insurance partner ABTAsure right here for around £10 for a single trip) it doesn’t make any sense to take a chance. So if you’re travelling abroad for your festival fix this summer, then make sure you’re properly covered.

Let’s be safe out there…
